Top Bollywood Movies Where Female Protagonists Rocked the Screen

Indian cinema has been one of the most predominant platforms for actors who struggled their way to achieve success and equal efforts were put in by both, male and female actors. Somehow audiences seemed more welcoming towards male actors as compared to female stars. But, the scenario changed when actresses like Nargis, Madhubala, Helen, Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman started taking matters into their hands and the business of Indian cinema flourished even more.

Since then, there has been no looking back for female actresses, as the aura and stunning persona of their yesteryear role models continued to inspire them. Glamour quotient, mere eye-candy aspect, or a role of substance, today women in Bollywood have taken the Centre stage. Here are our top picks from Bollywood that were ruled by the female protagonists. Let’s begin from the flashback first

1.         Nargis –Mother India – The breathtaking performance by this lady is referred to as the epic one even today. Entire crew associated with this movie thought that no other actress other than Nargis would have done justice to the role. Her character Radha, portrayed the plight of working class women during those days. The story gave out an extremely powerful message of women empowerment and the need for helping ladies struck by extreme poverty. The 1957 epic drama directed by Mehboob Khan gained a lot of appreciation from the audience as well as from the critics. Nargis played the character of a sturdy, independent and hardworking single mother who fought against the odds to protect her kids from all the evil and adversity.

2.        Seema Biswas –Bandit Queen – The story of the infamous female dacoit Phoolan Devi was played with much courage by the award winning actress Seema Biswas. Breaking the stereotypes, Biswas took an encouraging step in her acting career as she gave perfect shots for some of the bold and explicit scenes in the movie with commendable audacity. Directed by veteran director Shekhar Kapur in 1995, this film bagged many national awards and a few critic awards as well.

3.        Vidya Balan –Kahaani – Thesuspense-thriller film directed by Sujoy Ghosh was released in 2012 across India in Hindi and Bengali languages. Vidya Balan played the most dynamic character of a single woman Vidya Bagchi who was relentlessly searching for her lost husband and trying to solve the mystery. The film took an interesting turn at the climax wherein she revealed her true identity and purpose. The movie was made using the guerilla film techniques and was set at the backdrop of old streets of Kolkata. The story, screenplay, acting, music and dialogues were all extremely impactful and sent across a message of feminism, spirit of single woman and motherhood

4.        Sri devi –English Vinglish – The 2012 Indian drama film written and directed by Gauri Shinde was a successful effort made to boost every Indian woman’s confidence. Sri Devi akka Shashi Godbole was a simple Maharashtrian housewife who struggled and fought her poor English speaking skills after being constantly mocked by her husband and daughter. The story unfolds beautifully when she challenges her limits and climbs up the ladder, thus mastering the language and uplifting her self-confidence by the end of the film. The movie was much appreciated by the critics and won many national awards as well.


Some more movies which later joined the bandwagon of female leads were Queen, Mardaani, Gulab Gang and The Dirty Picture. All of them successfully marked their presence on box office thus entertaining the audience to the fullest. Seems the new era of female protagonists is now emerging in Bollywood and the charisma of these finest actors will continue to rule the silver screen forever.
